2013 Black Ankle Vineyards Syrah Phyllite
Region: North Central Piedmont, Frederick County, Maryland, United States of America
Tasting Note:May 27, 2016
Fourth red from Black Ankle and second Syrah. Ruby red with purple hues, darker than the Leaf-Stone. Nose seems to be straight out of Cote Rotie, lots of gamey notes and grilled herbs. Moderate tannins (6.5/10) and moderate plus body. Slight greenery and some nice savory notes on the palate. Smoother than the Leaf-Stone and a little dryer too. Well balanced, with a touch of wet rocks and herbs. Very surprised with the overall quality of the wines out of this estate in Maryland.
Only 98 cases produced and aged in 50% new French oak for 18 months.
