1998 Weingut Karl Haubs-Barzen Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett
Medium golden yellow. Very strong petrol and citronella on the nose. Some undertones of guava and peach. A touch sweeter than expected considering it is a Kabinett. Medium acidity (5.5/10) and light plus bodied. Nice citrus and tropical notes in the palate. An odd mouthfeel to start that tastes a little synthetic like petrol. Dry backend and medium finish.
First old Riesling we have tried from Germany. We did a little research and disected what is on the label to learn some more about this wine without a website. This specific bottling is from Mosel Saar Ruwer, since 2007 it is just Mosel, which is the third-largest region in Germany in terms of production. Next we looked into 'Bernkasteler Badstube' which is a the largest vineyard surrounding the village of Bernkastel and means "the roman spa of Bernkastel". Following that is 'Qualitätswein mit Prädikat' which is the top level of German wines, meaning "quality wine with specific attributes". Lastly, 'Kabinett' which is the lightest style of Riesling and usually made in a dry or off-dry fasion.
2018 till 2020.
