1990 Château Mouton Rothschild

Estate: Château Mouton Rothschild

Region: Pauillac, Médoc, Bordeaux, France

Tasting Note:May 12, 2017

Super fun wine to get us ready for the Bordeaux Masters Class this afternoon. Drank out of a 6L bottle (Imperial).

Medium garnet core with bricking in the edges. Layered nose with some definite bret, not off putting at all. Notes of barnyard, leather and dried red cherries. Well integrated and balanced. Moderate tannins (6/10) and medium bodied. Very rustic on the palate with some dried red cherries, forest floor and cedar. Long finish. Enough finesse to go another year or two but why wait, drinking well right now.

Château Mouton Rothschild was originally classified as a Deuxièmes Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Classification, until it was re-classified as a Premiers Cru (First Growth) in 1973 and is considered (even before this) as one of the best wines out of Bordeaux. The 1990 vintage is made up of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 9% Merlot. The artist for this label is Francis Bacon who lived from 1909 till 1992.
