2014 Elephant Seven First and Mercer Grenache

Estate: Elephant Seven Winery
Region: Walla Walla Valley, Columbia Valley, Oregon, United States of America
Vineyards: Monette's and River Rock Vineyards

Tasting Note:March 22, 2017

Medium to deep garnet core. Very feminine on the nose, but do not take that for being shy. Insanely complex nose that kept changing over time. Started off a little floral with roses and even a little bit of strawberries. Layered undertones of spices, herbs and mixed all together with some cinnamon. Floral notes definitely got stronger on day two. Moderate tannins (6/10), well integrated, excellent structure and medium plus to full bodied. Definitely a touch savory on the attack from 'the Rocks' region, this juice comes from, with meaty notes, wet rocks, and a touch of black pepper. Undertones of black cherries and raspberries. Gained even more complexity on day two with blacker fruits and nutmeg. Slightly dry and lingering finish.

Inaugural vintage for Elephant Seven Winery, this specific bottling is the First and Mercer Grenache made of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah. The Grenache is sourced from the Monette’s Vineyard, owned and managed by Monette and Mark Hoffmeister on the east side of the Walla Walla Valley in Milton-Freewater, Oregon. This area is noted as “the Rocks” district which is known for hot days and cool nights, as well as having excellent drainage. The Syrah is sourced from the River Rock Vineyard, owned and farmed by Dana Dibble, still located in the Rocks of Milton - Freewater, Oregon. Aged for seventeen months in all neutral French oak and on the lees the entire time. Unfiltered and only 98 cases produced.
