2013 Kale Wines Home Run Cuvée Kick Ranch
Second vintage of the Home Run Cuvée Kick Ranch out of Sonoma we have tried from Kale Wines. Bright garnet red with medium plus viscosity. From the start on day one the beginning of the nose reminded us of a wine from areas like Cote Rotie or Hermitage. Lots of olives, gamey notes, minerality, white pepper and some kind of floral note. Day two and three intensified the savory characteristics and added additional layers. More black olive notes, got a little dirtier and added layers with a little mesquite smoke, burnt rubber and more floral. Moderate tannins (6/10), medium bodied and long finish. Both body and finish held themselves together over the three days, tannins became more integrated and continued with solid acidity. Very tight palate to start, day one opened with savory characteristics and more olives. Day two and three added complexity with some savory berries on top of the olives. Great structure and backbone supported by the acidity. Not as long lived as the Broken Axle but its more savory sibling.
This specific bottling is a blend of 70% Syrah, and 30% Grenache. The Syrah (20% whole cluster) is saignéed before topping off with the Grenache. Aged for 20 months in mostly neutral French oak barrels.Only 450 cases produced and 14.9% alcohol.
