2012 Retro Cellars Elevation Petite Sirah

Estate: Retro Cellars
Region: Howell Mountain, Napa Valley, North Coast, California, United States of America
Vineyards: Park Muscatine and Los Abuelos Vineyards

Tasting Note:September 19, 2017

Coravinned a quick bit before heading out of town on vacation. Looking forward to trying this again with a decent decant.

Always love these Petite Sirahs from Mike Dunn, and this 2012 is the bigger brother to their Napa Valley bottling. Deep and dark purplish red. Layered and thick nose with dried crushed flowers, cloves, blueberries and vanilla. Heavy and dusty tannins (8/10) with a full body. High acidity but not over the top. A lot redder than the Napa Valley bottling when it comes to fruit flavors of raspberries, and bramble berries but does have a touch of blueberries. A bit woody too throughout with some forest floor, spices and white pepper. Very dry and long finish. This is a best of a wine that will improve with some bottle age.

Coravinned a quick bit before heading out of town on vacation. Looking forward to trying this again with a decent decant.

Deep purplish red. Layered nose with dark cocoa, spices, lavender, lilac, crushed rocks and cinnamon. Heavy tannins (8/10) and full bodied. Tight palate that definitely needs some time to open up and integrate further. Dried floral notes, stones, dried cherries and twigs. Powerful Petite Sirah with an insanely dry long finish.

The 2012 vintage made our of Petite Sirah with a touch of Syrah from Howell Mountain and a little Zinfandel from the Rust Ridge Vineyard in the Chiles Valley. Additionally, with the 2012 vintage there has been a change to the label, which is now noted as "Elevation". Mike and Kara decided to add this in order to place an additional emphasis on the elevation that these grapes are grown at, ranging from 1800 to 2100 feet above sea level. This wine is aged for 30 months in 100% new French oak, all with tight grains (Billion, Gamba, Garonnaise and Boutes).
