2015 Aperture Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon

Estate: Aperture Cellars

Region: Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, North Coast, California, United States of America

Tasting Note:May 25, 2018

First red wine at Aperture Cellars with Lauren. Deep ruby red in appearance. Layered nose with baking spices, little bit of purple flowers and some dusty dark cherries. Medium tannins (6.5/10) and medium plus body. Seems to have gone into a silent phase but excited to see where it will be in a couple years. Long finish.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is comprised of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Malbec from four vineyards within the Alexander Valley AVA; Oliver Ranch, Del Rio, SJ Ranch and Stuhlmuller Vineyards.

First stop on our very first trip to Sonoma, and we were not dissappointed. The wines made by Jesse Katz have a ton of finesse, power and character. Definitely a winery for any wine lover or collector to have on their radar. Stay tuned for some exciting new wines coming out in the 2017 vintage, possibly an old vine Zinfandel. Also a must visit for art and photography lovers.

Tasting Note:August 24, 2017

Brand new release (8/26) from Aperture Cellars and Jesse Katz.

Deep and dark purplish ruby red. Explosive nose with blueberries (almost a blueberry pie to start), cinnamon, vanilla, spices and crushed floral notes. Heavy tannins (7/10) and medium plus body with potential to beef up with some time. Layered palate with ripe fruits, spices, dark crushed gravel, vanilla, cinnamon, black currants, and a touch toasty. Great acidity and an almost austere structure, not harsh but powerful and keeping the fruit in check. Dry finish with more minerality in the long finish. Well made Cabernet and built to last.

First time trying these wines by Jesse Katz, very impressive. This bottling is made up of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Malbec. Aged for 18 months in 70% new French oak barrels. Another big part of these wines are that they focus on unique soil types through the Alexander Valley, this bottling comes from fruit planted on volcanic soils where are know for having excellent drainage and vigor, leading to a more expressive wine such as this.
