2012 Mithra Cabernet Sauvignon

Estate: Mithra Winery
Region: Mount Veeder, Napa Valley, California, United States of America
Vineyard: Aria Vineyard's Block A & B (Mithra Estate Vineyard)

Tasting Note:June 10, 2017

Tasted blind, theme was either Napa Cult Wines or High End Australian, not told directly to keep us on our toes.

Deep and dark ruby red. Loved the nose on this, super dark and layered. Notes of spices, tons of oak influence, cedar, sweet spices, tobacco, gunpowder, anise, dark gravel and some tight dark berries. Medium plus tannins (6.5/10) and full bodied. Rich and extracted on the palate with dark blackberries and plums, a touch of bark and dark cinnamon. Stoney and dry long finish.

Second wine of the tasting. Delicious wine which had around an hour to two hour decant. Could have used more to open up on the palate and let those tannins come out. Thought this was definitely from Napa Valley, young, within three years (2012, 2013, 2014) and definitely from a great growing year.

On the back of this bottle is the phrase "Soli Invicto Mithrae", which means "To the Sun, Invicible Mithra". This is incribed on Mythraic temples all accross Europe and Asia. Mithra is the 'Uncreated Creator' or Sun God which is from an ancient Indo-Iranian mythology. This region has written documentation all the way back to 1400 B.C. Beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon from the Mount Veeder AVA in Napa Valley. Made up of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec. Aged for 20 months in 80% new French oak. Excellent work Julien.
