2015 Cadle Family Wines Gewürztraminer

Estate: Cadle Family Wines

Region: Carneros, Sonoma County, California, United States of America

Tasting Note:June 5, 2016

Only white wine we tried from Cadle Family Wines. Clear pale yellow. Beautiful nose with a lot of sweet tropical fruits like pineapple and guava. Slight floral undertones. Very complex palate with notes of melon, cantaloupe, honeydew, grapefruit and guava. Moderate acidity (6.5/10) with some sweetness on the palate. Light bodied and long lingering finish. Well balanced, crisp and refreshing. Great structure and quaffable. Very impressed with this bottling of Gewürztraminer and a terrific value.

Cadle Family Wines is a small production wine estate that is part of a larger collective known as Holman Cellars. The winemaker/owner is Kevin Cadle who decided to start making wines after being an international teacher in countries like Curacao, Boliva, Columbia and Morocco. Prior to starting his own estate, Kevin started in the wine industry at Etude Wines before becoming the Associate Winemaker at Ancien Wines where we worked with making wines for Tournesol Wine and Yorba Wines. Kevin's wine-making philosophy is pretty straight forward. He does this by finding high-quality fruit, making interesting/overlooked varietals and of course bringing out the best flavors. At the moment Kevin is making a Gewürztraminer, Malbec, Chardonnay Musqué, Sangiovese, Dolcetto and a Rosé of Sangiovese.

The fruit for this wine is sourced from a small 1.5 acre vineyard of old vine Gewürztraminer that was planted 40 years ago. Located in Sonoma near the Napa border. The fruit cold soaked for a few days before being gently whole cluster pressed into a stainless steel tank. Chilled until it was inoculated when the temperature reached 55 degrees. This temperature was maintained throughout fermentation and was fermented completely dry. Only 60 cases produced.
