2012 Gibbs Dusty Red

Estate: Gibbs Napa Valley
Region: Napa Valley, California, United States of America
Vineyard: Garguilo and Capenter Ranch Vineyards

Tasting Note:March 4, 2016

Lastly was the Dusty Red which is comprised primarily of Merlot and Cabernet Franc with a decent amount of Syrah. Wine was a dark and opaque ruby red. Not sure what was going on day 1 with the nose and palate. There was some toffee, cherry cough syrup, and heat like alcohol. So we closed it back up and tried on day two. Day two was a huge improvement. Now it has opened up quite a bit more, especially on the nose. Even though it was done in neutral French oak it still seems to have a decent amount of oak influence in the nose with cassis, some baking spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, etc., a little smokey too. Slightly more tannins and body than the Cabernet Sauvignon, moderate tannins (5.5/10) with a good amount of acidity that pinches your tongue through to the moderate plus finish. Was expecting a little more weight in the body but it balances out and finishes up with a nice amount of black cherries. Wine completely turned around for the best on day two, great QPR/Value wine for only $19.99, hopefully we can try their cab franc, merlot and all the others soon!
