2014 Donelan Cuvée Moriah
Medium ruby red. A touch of leather on the nose with some minerality, a bit meaty, some bark, twigs and rhubarb. Medium tannins (6.5/10) and medium to medium plus body. A bit of slate on the palate with some red berries, savory herbs and dark cocoa. A nice bit of spiciness on the dry, long finish. Needs a little bit of time to open up nicely.
First winery on day two in Sonoma was Donelan Family Wines in Santa Rosa with Meredith. Now onto the red Rhone varietals with the Cuvée Moriah up first. This wine is made up of 84% Grenache from the Dry Stack vineyard in Bennett Valley and 16% Mourvedre from the Kopf vineyard. Aged for around 22 months in used puncheons (500L barrels) and 30% whole cluster. Only 560 cases produced.
