2014 Capensis Chardonnay

Estate: Capensis Wines
Region: Western Cape, South Africa
Vineyards: Fijnbosch, Kaaimansgat and E. Bruwer Vineyards

Tasting Note:February 09, 2017

Medium golden yellow. Complex nose with definite oak influence; layers of creme, a little yeasty, popcorn and light green fruits. Moderate and firm acidity (7/10). Great structure and texture with lemon curd and lemon zest. Quite lush with a medium plus body. Slight gravel in the long finish.

Second vintage of a brand new venture by the Spire Collection and Jackson Family Wines into South African wine. This is made of 100% Chardonna from three vineyards in South Africa. The first is Fijnbosch Vineyard in Stellenbosch where 56% of the fruit comes from. Fijnbosch is a Dutch word that means "fine bush" or "fine woods". The second is the Kaaimansgat Vineyard in Overberg where 20% of the fruit comes from. Kaaimansgat is high in the mountains at an elevation of 2,484 feet and means "crocodile's lair". Lastly is the E. Bruwer Vineyard in Robertson where 24% of the fruit comes from. 50% of the final blend is aged in 100% new French oak for 10 months.
